It is a welcome cliché’ that the children are the future. In order for us secure a prosperous world, it is imperative that we invest in our children today. We live in the times of abundance yet millions of people die of hunger every day. A huge number of these people are children. This is a manmade problem and man alone can end it. Nelson Mandela once said “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” It is therefore everyone’s duty and responsibility to care for all children and ensure that they grow to be healthy well rounded adults in mind, body and soul.
The Tiger Brands Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of non – fee paying school children and their surrounding communities by creating sustainable, scalable and replicable programmes focused on nutrition and education enhancement. The Tiger Brands Foundation has committed itself to its mission by providing breakfast to non-fee paying primary schools in the poorest communities in South Africa. Since its inception in 2010, the Tiger Brands Foundation has provided over 40 million meals to about 43 000 learners in all nine provinces from sunny Modimolle, Limpopo to the hills of Lady Frere, Eastern Cape.
This is our inaugural blog for the Foundation. We deliberately chose to launch the blog during the month of October because; it is the time where food security, nutrition and hunger themes take center stage in the world. On the 7th October, DAFF Deputy Minister Bheki Cele launched this month as Food security month. The 16th October today marks World Food Day. The whole week from 15th – 19th October we observe National Obesity week. The 17th October marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. We close this month on 30th October by commemorating the 6th Anniversary of the African Food & Nutrition Security Day.
On the 16th October 2015, the Tiger Brands Foundation together with the world celebrates World Food Day which is a day of action against hunger. One of the Millennium Development Goals is to eradicate extreme poverty and world hunger. On World Food Day people around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime.
The Tiger Brands Foundation prides itself by making a meaningful contribution in the plight of eradicating hunger by providing a nutritious breakfast which has a combination of nutrients which facilitate optimal growth in school learners. Each school on the programme has a menu and recipe of how to prepare breakfast which is specifically designed to cater for the school’s specific enrollment numbers. A different product is served every day which include Ace Instant, Mabela Fine, Jungle Oats and Morvite. In a school with 1500 learners breakfast is prepared in the following way:
The breakfast is supported by a National School Nutrition Programme lunch (NSNP) provided by the Department of Basic Education which insures that learners are able to perform to an optimal level at school.
On this year’s Nutrition month, the Tiger Brands Foundation reiterates its commitment to food security and strengthening it’s partnership with The National Department of Basic Education – National Schools Nutrition Programme.
